Tarique Rahman acquitted in bus arson case in Gazipur

A court has acquitted 60 people, including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, in a case filed in connection with an arson incident on a passenger bus in Gazipur’s Joydebpur.
Gazipur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Ahmed Shahriar Tariq gave the order after a hearing this afternoon.
Former Gazipur Bar Association President and Tarique’s lawyer Sahiduzzaman confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.
According to court sources, a bus was set on fire in the Bhogra Bypass area under ​​Joydebpur Police Station in February, 2015. Joydebpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Syed Abul Hossain filed a case in connection with the incident under the Special Powers (Explosives) Act.
Md Hossain Ali was listed as the prime accused, while 41 others were named as accused along with 20 to 30 unidentified individuals.
Later, a charge sheet was filed with the court with the addition of Tarique’s name, among 60 named as accused.
After a long hearing, the accused were acquitted as there were no witnesses and the allegations were proven false.
During the hearing, Public Prosecutor (PP) Mustafa Kamal, Special PP Abu Taher, and Additional PP Ershad Hossain represented the state and advocate Shahiduzzaman, Md Saiful Islam Molla, Nasir Uddin, and others stood on behalf of the defendant.
